Tame Valley Viaduct upgrade

A contract to strengthen and refurbish the A38(M) Tame Valley Viaduct, which links the M6 to the city centre, has been given by Birmingham City Council to Volkerfitzpatrick.

The 620 metre long composit viaduct which was built in the early 1970’s and which forms the northern end of Aston Expressway near Spaghetti Junction is now in much need of repair.

The project will involve the strengthening of the viaduct’s superstructure with steel plates which will be secured by a combination of bolting and welding. Following this anti-corrosion paint will be applied to the structure together with further refurbishment work to help in the preservation of the longevity of the viaduct.

VolkerFitzpatrick are to use high level platforms which will span from pier to pier to work above live electrified rail lines, main roads and local businesses in order to be able to keep the viaduct open during the work.
