Skanska awarded a Defence Contract

A contract to redevelop a British Army vehicle storage and maintenance facility has been awarded to Skanska by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation.

The project at the army’s vehicle base at Aschurch, Tewkesbury will be to build new storage workshops together with the mechanical and electrical engineering services needed.

The plans include the demolition of 58 buildings, construction of 12 new buildings and refurbishment of one existing facility. All site infrastructure will also be renewed.

Providing technical services to Skanska will be Mace.

Helped by the use of offsite construction the Vehicle Storage Support Programme (VSSP) hopes to achieve DREAM Excellent – the defence estate environmental assesment standard.

With the majority of the Army’s vehicle fleet either on or training for operations a sizeable fleet is centrally stored in order to be ready to deploy when needed. VSSP will redevelop this centralised facility to deliver a sustainable storage solution and ensure operational readiness of the Army’s vehicles and minimise the need for maintenance.

Work begins on the demolition in September with completion planned before the end of 2026. The Ashchurch site, when completed, will provide Controlled Humidity Environment storage for 4,100 vehicles.
