Resurfacing at Stansted Airport

A five month operation is taking place to resurface the runway at the busy London Stansted Airport.

Lagan Aviation & Infrastructure Specialist Contractor will work five nights a week from a Saturday to Wednesday to renew 3km of runway. The project will use approximately 50,000 tonnes of asphalt which will cover an area the size of 25 football pitches. Runway lights will also be replaced with LED lamps.

For the first 11 weeks of the project the runway is to be closed from midnight until 6am. The second phase of the project will see the runway remain open but with a reduced length to allow flights to continue operating.

This latest project at the airport has been scrupulously planned with work to be completed as quickly and safely as is possible.

The runway at Stansted was last fully resurfaced in 2006 when the airport handled 15m passengers, passengers today are thought to number 28m.
