Redbridge Causeway, Southampton

Work is to take place on Hampshire County Council’s scheme to refurbish the Redbridge Causeway in Southampton. Milestone Infrastructure and Dyer & Butler are working together on this third and final phase.

The £25m refurbishment will aim to increase the lifespan of the structure by at least 60 years. Repairs to the causeway’s defective concrete will be undertaken by Miletone Infrastructure before they install an impressed current cathodic protection system which will protect the structure from deterioration from tidal and saltwater erosion. Plans also include a new waterproofing system on the bridge together with upgrading a section for a cycle route for future use.

Dyer & Butler are to provide engineering assurance support to make sure Network Rail’s safety standards are met where the work will affect the flyover across the railway.

Atkins, part of SNC-Lavalin, are the consulting engineer on the project.

As the Redbridge Causeway site is next to endangered habitats the project has been designed to guarantee their protection jointly with Marine Management Organisation and the Environment Agency.
