New Mental Health Unit for Bodelwyddan, North Wales

Following the Welsh governments approval of the BCU Health Board outline plans for a new in-patient adult and older persons mental health unit at Glan Clwyd Hospital, Bodelwyddan, near Rhyl the scheme is now making progress to a full assessment.

BAM have been instructed by Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board to develop the detailed design for the new facility.

The 63-bed mental health facility will replace existing care and support services in the hospital’s existing Ablett Unit and the existing services at the Bryn Hesketh in patient older persons mental health facility in Colwyn Bay. The project will be built on a car park in the north western corner of the Glan Clwyd hospital campus.

The project is to include a 14-bed older persons’s mental health ward with en-suite facilities and improved recreational areas. A 13-bed dementia care assessment unit and provision for families and carers to stay overnight, en-suite facilities to all bedrooms, recreational and therapy areas and also a secure courtyard.

Two purpose built 16-bed adult wards with de-stimulation area on each ward providing a safe nursing environment for high acuity patients avoiding the need to traansfer to other mental health units.

Powell Dobson are the design partners for the project, Ramboll the structural engineer and Arup the building services engineer. Lorne Stuart building services construction will also be included.

BAM were awarded this contract through the NHS Building for Wales framework. Construction is due to start in 2024 and completion planned for 2026, subejct of course to final approvals being secured.
