Manchester Department Store Redevelopment

Russell WBHO, Stretford based contractor, have been appointed by German property developer AM Alpha to redevelop the Rylands building which is situated on the corner of Market Street and High Street in Manchester city centre.

Plans for the complete refurbishment of the Grade 11 listed building, which was previously the Debenhams department store, will see the upper floors converted into office space with a new shopping arcade on the ground floor together with restaurant area.

A four-storey extension to the 500,000 sq ft building is also included in the plans, to provide 10 floors of office space above the retail and leisure space. The main works on the project are planned to start in 2023 as enabling works have already started and completion is planned for early 2025 with an expectation of certification for sustainable construction according to BREEAM Excellent.

AM Alpha who bought the building in 2017 consider it a great privilege to work with a listed building and they welcome the opportunity to restore Rylands to its former glory in a sustainable way.
