HMP Glasgow Masterplan Application

Recently submitted for the Scottish Prison Service’s new HMP Glasgow Prison is a masterplan aplication.

Plans to open HMP Glasgow in 2026 will see Victorian-era HMP Barlinnie replaced.

Architect Holmes Miller designed the masterplan for the 54 acre site at the previous Proven Gas Works, to the north east of the city centre, with Pick Everard accountable for the residential blocks and landscaping. The design team will be supported by Arup (mechanical, electrical and public health design) and Curtins (civil and structural design).

Kier Construction were awarded the pre-construction contract in August 2022 to develop the detailed design of the new facility. Also included in the construction team are FES as building services subcontractor, PCE for precast concrete supplying and installation and Carey’s for groundworks.

Expected throughout 2023 will be further planning applications for individual site buildings.

The plans for HMP Glasgow are designed to meet the Scottish governments Net Zero Public Sector Buildings Standard with modular construction methods, heat pumps for primary heating and cooling provision, passive ventilation and other smart technologies including automated prisoner movement
