A former BHS department store in the centre of Swansea is to be converted into the city’s main library and archive service. Swansea Council have appointed Kier to take on this project. The architect will be Austin-Smith Lord and the lead consultant is Coreus.
The repurposing of the building will create further public facing council services to create a ‘community hub’. Work is planned to begin this autumn with the project being a perfect example of a sustainable city centre redevelopment rejuvinating existing buildings while reducing carbon use in the fight against climate change.
The current Central Library and archive services receive approximately 300,000 visitors each year creating a lot of extra footfall helping to boost city centre shopping and employment.
