A further previous Debenhams Store in St Catherine’s Walk, Carmarthen, which closed in May 2021, has had plans submitted for the conversion of the store.
Bouygues UK is the preferred bidder for the Hwb project which is a shared project between Carmarthenshire County Council, Hyuwel Dda University Health Board and the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.
Carmarthenshire County Council have secured funds from the government’s ‘levelling up fund’ to be able to change the old department store into a ‘hub’ for numerous public, social and community services including a gym and museum.
A certificate of conformity for a change of use of the old town centre department store was approved under the county council’s local development order and the current planning application therefore relates to the external works needed for the conversion of the building.
Plans for the Hub will include use by the health board to promote preventative health care and wellbeing. There is also to be a gym, a tourist information centre together with galleries to be used to disply museum collection.
